Climate Action ~Waste management strategy for Chennai City
Summary : Bio gas production service for transport sectors using food , agriculture and plastic
Tamil Nadu alone producing total quantity of solid waste is 14228 tons / day as reported by the local government. Chennai Alone producing 3000 tonnes per day .
Project details :
In Tamilnadu 338.22 lakh vehicles, including 285.24 lakh two-wheelers are available . It requires high level oil imports according to country’s population.
The population of Tamil Nadu is 7.68 CR
Petrol and diesel usage in Chennai City alone 5000 litre/ day
The oil import price above 5000 / galloen
Petrol price above 100 / liter
Diesel Price nearly 90 rs / litre
Climate Action :
According to IIT research , Chennai will cumulatively emit 231.9 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (Co2) by 2040 from construction and operations of buildings alone .
Cities like Chennai should require new fuel for transportation for low cost . Bio gas is alternatives fuel source for vehicles , it produce very low pollution to environment.
Benefits :
Bio gas CBG production cost is very less compare than oil refining system .
The main source for bio gas CBG is food waste , agriculture waste and plastic waste ,it comes from every streets from cities , towns and villages . Especially from chennai alone produce 25 tonnes per day of food waste .
Problems to Solve :
In Tamil Nadu there are 12 Corporations, 124 Municipalities and 528 Town Panchayats. In total the solid waste generation is 14,600 Tonnes per day.
The source cost is very less and production cost is lesser than petrol or diesel .
Transport cost for picking and delivering waste from hotels , restaurants, corporations and collection point to recycling plant is much higher than production cost .
Example :
Countries such as Germany, Italy, UK, France and Switzerland are promoting bio-gas usage promoted by supporting legal frameworks, education schemes and the availability of technology. Biogas produced in European countries is mostly fed into local natural gas grids and used for power generation. Grid injection is most common in European states followed by vehicles fuelled with biogas (either pure or in blend with natural gas) and biogas is also used for heating purposes either directly or blended to natural gas.
Policy Support
1. Government of India has released the National Policy on Bio-Fuels 2018 vide gazette notification no. 33004/99 dated 8.6.2018. The policy emphasizes on promotion of advanced Bio-fuels including CBG.
2. The Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBAR-DHAN) scheme was launched by Government of India to convert cattle dung and solid waste in farms to Bio-CNG (CBG) and compost. GOBAR-DHAN scheme proposes to cover 700 projects across the country in 2018-19.
3. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has notified Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for Bio-CNG
